IF: A Poem About Possibilities

If- Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream – and not make dreams your master;
If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:.
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build’em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings – nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And – which is more – you’ll be a Man, my son!

The World Needs Kindness… NOW!

TP and water

A few days ago, I went to a local store in search of toilet paper thanks to the coronavirus epidemic. I found what I needed and stood in a long line to checkout. A lady who had about 25 items stood in front of me. I had two items. She turned around and said she would allow me to get in front of her since I only had two things. I refused, but when she insisted, I decided to take her up on her offer.

While it is not my intention, I must inject the obvious racial and cultural differences between myself and this lady. I am a middle-aged black man. She was an older Asian woman. Honestly, I don’t think two people could be more different. I guess that’s how it was supposed to be. How did we end up in the same lane at the same time? A five second deviation by either one of us would have prevents us from meeting in that line.

Remember, we were amid panic buying in an overcrowded store during a pandemic. In this backdrop, a stranger did something nice for me: she let me move ahead of her in a grocery line.  I bought my two items, and then I really looked at this lady. She was somewhat weak, due to her age. She was alone, and she looked tense. The strain of the coronavirus outbreak has people upset.

Something strange came over me. I felt the need to reciprocate for the act of kindness she gave to me. I saw that she had a case of water. I told the cashier to ring it up and I would pay for it. I told the lady I was about to pay for her water. She smiled and thanked me. She moved forward to make contact, but probably realized we were warned about keeping a safe social distance. She waved happily. I waved back and took my items and left.

It was then that I realized it. Two complete strangers, both in the same place at the same time, shared two acts of kindness neither person asked for. For me it was therapeutic. After all, we were in the midst of the coronavirus scare. At a time when we see so many people going for themselves to protect themselves, this dear woman and I did the opposite. We helped each other.

The world needs kindness… NOW! Not because of the pandemic we are currently facing. We need kindness because we, regardless of our race, culture, or status, are in the same boat every day. We are one. It should not take a time of crisis to figure this out. We should live it every day. We should help each other. We should support each other. We should love each other.

I sincerely hope the woman in the store remains healthy and unaffected by the virus. I hope that she felt the same level of joy when I purchased her water that I felt when she let me move ahead of her in line. It was touching. It was inspiring. It was beautiful. It proved that the smallest actions could make a big difference. If we all put this into practice daily, what a better world we could create. Let’s go…

I am challenging you to serve. I am challenging you to offer help. I am challenging you to encourage others. It starts with you. It starts with me. It starts with us. The world needs kindness… NOW!

2020: Use Your Vision

An excerpt from the book: Defining Success: One Word at a Time by Gary A. McAbee…

DS Vision

2020: Use Your VISION

We have been given the power to see in advance what may become our future. It is called vision. We can use our vision to see victory. We can use our vision to see the results of activating our faith. We can use our vision to create” if” statements that have meaning and purpose. We can use our vision to dream about the possibilities of a brighter tomorrow. It should probably scare, and then excite us when we realize we really can see the future! It does not matter how far away we believe we are from the future we want. We can see our ultimate destination: success.

One of the greatest gifts given to man is our ability to imagine, and use what we “see” to create a vision. To be clear, I need to establish a clear distinction between the vision of the eyes (natural), and the vision of the mind (spiritual). These are two totally different things that can disrupt the process of success if they are not separated. Remember this fact: we cannot trust the natural vision we receive from our eyes. It is created for us. On the other hand, we can trust the spiritual vision we receive from our mind. It is created by us. It is a gift given to us from our Creator.

Wait! We cannot trust what we see with our eyes? This is 100% correct. For all the non-believers, I need you to complete a short exercise. Use your natural vision to look (very quickly) in the direction of the sun. How big does it appear to be? Now find out the real dimensions of the sun. The object you saw and thought you knew based on your natural vision is actually a lot larger than it appears to be. Your natural vision let you down in terms of identifying the true size of the sun. If it can let you down here, believe that it can, and it does, let you down all the time.

Instead, we need to focus on the spiritual vision we create with our minds. This is the ability to create through our imagination anything we can conceive. It is a scary thought that we have the ability to put ourselves in any situation and visualize it over and over again. Yet this universal skill is right there for the taking. In fact, we use our spiritual vision all the time without even realizing it. Today, you visualized yourself doing something in your mind that was totally different than what you were actually doing. You might have seen something from yesterday. You might have seen an event in the future. Either way, you used your spiritual vision to see something that is not actually happening in the present moment.

Here comes the challenging part… how can we use our spiritual vision to change our reality and see victory? Vision though our imagination can be a great thing, but it can also be frightening. It all depends on how we use our spiritual vision. If we see dreadful things, dark clouds, and doom and gloom, then our reality will reflect dreadful things, dark clouds, and doom and gloom. Even if this is fleeting, the fact is the damage has already been done. The spiritual vision we saw becomes fixed. Next, we allow our eyes to look in the natural world for the despair and negative energy we have already pictured.

On the other hand, you also have the ability to use spiritual vision as a seed planted to do great things. If we see bright things, beautiful clouds, and sun and fun, then our reality will reflect bright things, beautiful clouds, and sun and fun. Even if this is fleeting, the result created though our vision has already occurred. The spiritual vision we saw becomes fixed. Next, we allow our eyes to look in the natural world for the encouragement and positive energy we have already pictured. Yes, positive energy is always present and easy to find. If you find that hard to believe, we have several concepts to come that can help you find the victory that your spiritual vision can uncover and bring into existence.

If you’re a little skeptical, trust me I understand, but you must remember that the seeds of victory have already been planted inside you. Have faith! You have explored the possibilities of “if.” You have always had the ability to dream and it is in your nature to be a dreamer. Now develop your spiritual vision. If you are like me, when you completed your “if statements, you used your spiritual vision and probably did not realize it. I could see the listing of my book as a best seller. I could see myself taking pictures in front of the pyramids and walking on the Great Wall. I could see myself in a receiving line to greet the former President. I am sure you envisioned what it will feel like when your wishes come true as well. This is the power of the human mind in full effect, the power of spiritual vision!

When you completed the “Wish Upon a Star” exercise, you used your spiritual vision and probably did not realize it. I sincerely hope that you took a little time to think as you wrote your responses. If you did, your spiritual vision should have allowed you to see how you can make those dreams come true. Remember the Law of Attraction and how it works. When we permit ourselves to see something yet to exist, we call the things associated with that outcome into the natural world. This sharpens our focus. It changes our sight from the natural to the spiritual so that we can see everything, including things previously missed or not originally converted by our natural vision.

An example of natural vision converted into spiritual vision that comes to mind is my recent purchase of a Ford Fusion. Unless you are a car enthusiast or highly observant, I am sure you would have a hard time spotting a Ford Fusion on the road. That is, unless you were looking for it or somehow aware of the appearance of the car. Once I purchased my Fusion, all of a sudden they were everywhere! My natural vision spotted the car. My new spiritual vision allowed me to see clearly what was already there. I call this hidden in plain sight. Just like seeing that car, your victory is also hidden in plain sight. Use your spiritual vision to see it and the Law of Attraction will draw it to you.

We must learn how to see ourselves with our outcome in mind. In other words, we can use our spiritual vision to see success. Contrary to what we are taught, we should see things with the end result in mind first, and then call into existence things required to get to it. For example, if I have the spiritual vision to see this book as a best seller, then I must allow myself to see what that scenario looks like before it happens. This vision should serve as the spark to do all that is required to reach my end result. It should also provide plenty of motivation to work as long and as hard as it takes to get the job done. In fact, the work might even become easy because the result looks so good!

Allow your spiritual vision to go to work. Allow it to create the reality you want to see in the natural world. You have the power to do this! Visualize what you want to achieve your victory. What does it look like? What things can you see yourself doing to make it happen? Visualize yourself doing the hard work required to be successful with a smile on your face. It will allow you to smile (at least a little bit) even when it is time to put in the serious work. I guarantee the heavy lifting will be a little lighter if you visualize yourself getting through it to achieve success!

Affirmation: My gift of spiritual vision will work to attract the resources readily available to achieve the ultimate victory I will attain.

Take Care of Your Self

Self T shirt

Self-worth

Do you know what you are worth? You should understand that you were created differently than every other person. This means you are special, unique, and gifted in ways that no one else can claim. If you ever question your self-worth, find someone that believes in you or something that reminds you of your talent. Your worth is infinite.

Self-esteem

Once you know your worth, you must work on how you feel about yourself. Who do you see when you look in the mirror? You should see someone who is good as is regardless of your situation or circumstances. You must believe are important, respected, and loved. Ind things that help you build up your self-esteem. You must believe you are worthy.

Self-talk

Pay attention to the things you say about yourself to yourself. Do you tell yourself good things or bad things? Remember, you are always talking to yourself and always listening to what you say. Therefore, the things you say must always be uplifting. Your self-talk must be encouraging so that it helps you remain positive and upbeat.

Self-care

You must start by taking care of your needs first. This includes your physical, mental, and spiritual needs that affect your health. You must take care of your body by monitoring what you consume. You must also take care of your mind by absorbing things that will benefit your health and well-being. No one should be more invested in your self-care than you.

Self-confidence

You must understand that you have what you need to be successful. You are good enough. Build self-confidence by reminding yourself who you are and what you can do. Use your self-talk.  It takes a lot of positive energy to come to this realization. Next, act on it so that you can move forward. Being more self-confident requires getting out of your comfort zone and taking action.

Self-respect

Develop a code of ethics that you will not cross. This is how you respect yourself. Avoid situations you know are not good for you. This includes people, certain places, and activities that will lead you astray. Listen to your conscience: that inner voice that tells you what’s right and what’s wrong. It will help you keep your self-respect intact.

Self-awareness

It is important to know how your behavior affects people and situations. Are you doing the right things? Are you saying the right things? How are people reacting and responding to you? You have a filter that tells you if your words and actions are appropriate and properly received. Use it. Again, listen to your inner voice for guidance.

Self-control

We all have limits and boundaries. It takes a great deal of energy to stay within those limits. Our world is full of temptation. Try not to fall victim to things that are attractive, but not necessarily good for you. It is a constant struggle. Yet staying in control allows you to focus on the things you need to do and say. No one can do this for you.

Self-improvement

By nature, we are all flawed individuals. The first step to self-improvement is recognizing this fact. Even if you have expert-knowledge, there is something else you can learn. There is also someone who knows more than you. Therefore, we all should seek ways to get better. Education and learning are processes that should never stop. Neither should your desire to get better.

Self-help

There are so many ways to seek knowledge. There is plenty of book knowledge. The internet has an endless amount of information.  There are people can learn from too. However, the only way to learn is to seek.  Self-help requires you to get out there, look for information, test it, and use it as needed to improve your life and your experiences. You must learn and continue to learn for the rest of your life.

Self-education

The formal education offered in our school system is not enough. You must embark on teaching yourself. A good place to start is through external sources. Read everything. Another part of this process is learning from your personal experiences. See everything. No one else can see these lessons from your viewpoint. They are invaluable. What did you learn today?

Self-direction

You should know what direction your life is taking, and where you want to go in the future. Do you have a short-term plan for your life? Do you think about where you want to be 5-10 years from now? Without an idea, you will not be able to direct yourself toward the future you seek. Write down goals. Give yourself deadlines. This is how you move forward and in the right direction.

Self-reflection

A part of this process is taking time to honestly assess where you are and what you are doing. Are you on the right track, or off-course? This is a great time to review your goals and plans for making them happen. Reward yourself when you hit your target. Learn and improve when you don’t. Commit to trying again. Giving up if you don’t like what you see is not an option. Instead, redirect, refocus, and recommit.

Self-sacrifice

To get what you want, sometimes you must give something up for a cause bigger than yourself. You might have to help someone else get what they want, as a lesson to help you later. You might need to pause your efforts, to meet immediate needs. Often, the times you sacrifice your needs, you get time to see things from a different perspective. You get time to rest during your personal journey, temporarily, when you help others. Look for these opportunities.

Self-sufficient

In the end, the only one who can help you is you. You must learn how to depend on yourself. Learn how to support yourself because sometimes that’s the only support you will get. Taking care or yourself requires learning what you need when you need it. Next you must figure out how to satisfy your needs. You must also pat yourself on the back and pick yourself up when you fall short. Remember, you have been given everything you need to take care of yourself.

Self-employment

You are your boss. You work for you. Now that you know this, how can you be highly productive so you can be successful? Your life is your job, and the only one who can guide you is you. The only one who pays you is you. The only one who is responsible for your outcomes is you. Take care of yourself so that you can do a great job for yourself. You are self-employed.

Take care of yourself!

2020 Is Four Months Away: The Time is NOW!

Now

I can vividly remember some of the hysteria surrounding January 1, 2000. Do you remember Y2K? It was based off the erroneous theory that computers would not be able to process the date 01-01-2000. As a result, the world’s technological systems were supposed to crash, and wipe out all humanity because of our dependence on data. That was 20 years ago.

2020 Is Four Months Away: The Time is NOW!

I can vividly remember some of the hysteria surrounding December 21, 2012. Do you remember this date on the Mayan calendar? It was based off the erroneous theory that the world would end on this date because of the Mayan calendar. The end of the world  was predicted to happen thousands of years ago on this date. That was 8 years ago.

2020 Is Four Months Away: The Time is NOW!

Even if you cannot remember these two “events”, please understand how time has marched past these two dates swiftly. We have moved forward in time. Before we know it, we will be able to say “remember back in 2019 when… that was 20 years ago!” Our recall of time will happen like this, because there is an old adage that applies here. The older we get, the faster the years seem to pass.

2020 Is Four Months Away: The Time is NOW!

What this means is NOW is the time for you and I to decide what we want to do with the time we have left. NOW is the time to write and execute your plan. NOW is the time to start a business. NOW is the time to take that trip. NOW is the time eat the cake. NOW is the time to start living, or just start living a better life.

2020 Is Four Months Away: The Time is NOW!

Time will not wait for you. It never does. So why should anyone wait for the right time? I can guarantee someone reading this right NOW has talked themselves out of doing something because it was not the right time. It never seems to be the right time. But the truth is no one knows when it’s the right time, so the right time is always NOW.

2020 Is Four Months Away: The Time is NOW!

Remember this fact: nothing in life is guaranteed, including the time you have left to live. Therefore, since the moment we were born, we have been running out of time. This should be enough to get us to think about what we do from here on out. We need to use our time wisely. What will you do today to start making the most of your time?

2020 Is Four Months Away: The Time is NOW!

We love to use dates as reminders, and in some cases, warnings about what is to come. Many people thought January 1, 2000 would trigger a financial collapse. Twelve years later, some thought December 21, 2012 would be the end of the world. Perhaps it’s time to think of the date January 1, 2020 as a new beginning instead of an ominous warning. It should be a date to signal your opportunity to get started. Next year is your chance to do it NOW!

2020 Is Four Months Away: The Time is NOW!

Mental Health Check: Who am I?

who-am-i

Sometimes I wonder if life is moving on without me. I am being left behind. I don’t fit in with the crowd. I don’t feel comfortable in my own skin. I am not a happy camper. I fight with things other people do with relative ease. In fact, it feels like life is a constant struggle. Things don’t go as planned. To cope, I have learned to fake it. I smile and laugh as I go through each day. On the surface, it looks like everything is fine. But it’s not. I need a mental health check.

Who am I?

There is a war going on inside my head. I am confused. It feels like bad luck is my best friend. It seems like misfortune follows me and shows up right on time. It hinders my progress. Something always gets in the way. The “good” news is I have learned to deal with it. On the surface, it looks like everything is fine. But it’s not. I need a mental health check.

Who am I?

I take two steps forward, and then circumstances cause me to take three steps back. Do the math: I am not getting very far. I am the quintessential hamster running on a wheel. I go round and round without making any progress. I am tired of running, but I keep moving anyway. I don’t know any other way. On the surface, it looks like everything is fine. But it’s not. I need a mental health check.

Who am I?

I see others who are “happy”. Maybe things come easy for them. They sure as hell don’t come easy for me. I try hard, very hard. I work hard, very hard. When will my effort and hard work pay off? Maybe it’s time to stop working. I deserve to take it easy so that’s what I’ll do. I’ll just take things one day at a time and “enjoy” life. On the surface, it looks like everything is fine. But it’s not. I need a mental health check.

Who am I?

My mind sends me mixed messages. Sometimes it says I will not amount to anything. It says: “Why try? You won’t succeed. You will get the same sorry result you got the last time.” Other times my mind says something different. It says: “Try your luck. Maybe this time will be different.” So I try again because I can still put forth an effort. On the surface, it looks like everything is fine. But it’s not. I need a mental health check.

Who am I?

I am your mother. I am your sister. I am your daughter. I am your wife. I am your grandmother. I am your aunt. I am your niece. I am your cousin.

I am your father. I am your brother. I am your son. I am your husband. I am your grandfather. I am your uncle. I am your nephew.

I am your friend. I am your associate. I am your coworker. I am your employee. I am your boss. I am your customer. I am your neighbor.

Who am I?

I live a double life. My mental health, attitude, and self-esteem is an important issue. This is why you should check on me as often as possible. Do not assume that I am doing well just because it looks like I am doing well. I could be hiding something. Sometimes the only “cure” is to hear from you. Maybe I need to talk to you. Even better, maybe I need to see you. Please take a moment to reach out to me.

Who am I?

I am anybody, somebody, definitely not nobody, and hopefully not everybody.

I need a mental health check.

Defining Success: One Word at a Time

Defining Success: One Word At a Time

by  Gary A. McAbee

Now Available on Amazon and Amazon Kindle

Synopsis:

The road to success can be a long, arduous journey. It is a journey that needs a step-by-step, clearly defined strategy to arrive at the final destination. To accomplish this goal, Gary A. McAbee has laid out a series of success principles, carefully placed in a logical order, which can lead to greater success. These principles have been used consistently by many of the highest achievers in our society. If they can use these concepts to reach success, then they can also be used by everyone to achieve victory.

The book Defining Success: One Word at a Time starts with defining and visualizing the end result: victory. From there, concepts like faith, passion, knowledge, and patience are introduced to the reader as building blocks toward success. Finally, the book ends with an all-encompassing definition of success. This definition, like all of the success keywords before it, includes the previous concepts outlined in this book.

Projects, known as Call-to-Action exercises, are located throughout the book as samples that can be used to supplement the success keywords. In essence, these exercises serve as written examples that allow the reader to work toward success.
